Healing Country Launch

At the recent ‘Lintalumala Healing Country Launch.’ our Artist in Residence Cathy McAuliffe invited guests to participate in her ‘lintalumala garden installation’ project.

Participants were invited to take a native cherry/lintalumala to hang on a branch as a gesture of respect for the First Nations peoples originally living on the current site of GYC and as a way to acknowledge the ongoing First Nations connections to this site. The cherries are two coloured silicone beads that Cathy has attached to cord and are loosely based on the lintalumala berries that grow on native cherry trees.

Native cherry trees are dependent upon a host tree and only thrive in landscapes of natural balance and equilibrium. After the event, Cathy will be installing the cherries on the branches into the garden area of the Hobart Davis Centre as a symbol of both mourning for the past and hope for the future.

The branches are currently on display in the lintalumala Gallery at Hobart.
