Writers Express Program
The Davis Centre in conjunction with English faculty staff, is proud to introduce the Writers Express program!
Launched in 2024, this initiative is a critical element of our library's strategic focus on enhancing literacy through innovative and engaging methods. Drawing on the high-level expertise of Davis Centre staff, a number of whom are published in the fields of creative writing and poetry, “Writers Express” is designed to elevate students' literacy by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and linguistic proficiency. Our approach seeks to both supplement the curriculum and address Tasmania's literacy issues by igniting students' enthusiasm for poetry.
The Writers Express program builds on the successes of our existing Recreational Reading Program, which has effectively engaged students by aligning reading materials with their individual interests. Observations from recent poetry workshops conducted with Cassie Christensen's English Studio 3 students, have highlighted the positive impact of poetry on student engagement and creativity. Encouraged by these findings, Maddy Summers-Stuart and Cassie Christensen are currently developing the Writers Express program so it can be extended to GYC’s feeder colleges.
Poetry is a powerful tool for advancing literacy because it engages multiple facets of language and cognitive development. By incorporating poetry into literacy instruction in a fun and creative way, educators can not only develop students' fundamental literacy skills but also inspire a lifelong appreciation for language and literature.
If you would like to book a session, please reach out to Maddy Summers-Stuart or a member of the Davis Centre team.
