Artist in Residence - Cathy McAuliffe

We’re excited to have Tasmanian artist and designer, Cathy McAuliffe as our Davis Centre Artist in Residence for 2023 - 2024.

Cathy has been working as an art director, graphic designer and illustrator for over 25 years. She specialises in creating graphics for young people, events and festivals, as well as corporate identities.

Through collaboration with GYC students and staff, Cathy will explore concepts relating to memory, community, and belonging via a range of mediums. All key ‘findings’ of the process will be used by the artist to create artistic works to be hung in the Davis Centres at Hobart and Glenorchy.

The artworks will represent the contributions of the collaborators, culminating into an imagined landscape; an abstract montage of streets, neighbourhoods, and significant landscapes. The artworks may feature words, street names, drawings, small 3D objects, collaged pieces of student work, or copies of historic GYC archive text. Cathy will also be drawing upon her on personal stories and conceptions of home and place, honing-in on artefacts from her own childhood that contribute to the texture and fabric of 'home.'

Cathy says that she hopes for the result to be "one that all students and staff can feel proud of and that the process and the final pieces will help create a shared sense of unity at the school.”
